Women in STEM. Girl Scouts. By now, you have probably at least heard of these terms and organizations, but how many women and girls do you know who actually participate in them? The term STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math and despite the awesome contributions women have made to these fields (have you seen Hidden Figures?) there are still stereotypes that women have to overcome.
Research shows that at a certain age, girls will move away from the STEM fields because it is not “cool” or “appropriate” for women to enter those fields or do those jobs. And even though the above-mentioned organizations are doing yeoman’s work in changing those numbers and increasing participation, there are still negative stereotypes to overcome.
But the truth is that women and girls in STEM come in all forms and are strong, intelligent, beautiful and feminine. And being smart is cool and beautiful! A study co-conducted by 21st Century Fox, The Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, and J. Walter Thompson Intelligence conducted a survey online and nearly 63 percent of the 2,000 women who work in STEM said X-Files character Dana Scully served as their role model. Who is cooler than Scully?!
This is why I decided to create Candace Stribling Jewelry. They are designs for mid-career women who love science, math, architecture and technology. The minimalist, contemporary designs can go from work to weekend to evening. We are busy but we are also beautiful and feminine and our accessories should reflect that! Candace Stribling Jewelry also supports organizations that encourage young women to pursue fields in STEM so we can cultivate the best minds for the future. A portion of each purchase will go towards supporting Girls Who Code, an organization that encourages young girls to learn about STEM.
If you would like to continue to share your love of science and technology and see how it plays a role in jewelry design, I invite you to become a member of the CSJ Insider Club. Be the first to know about new arrivals, exclusive member offers, and get inside the studio.
